FROM INDUSTRIAL AREA TO ATTRACTIVE RESIDENTIAL AREA
Teglholmen’s history is closely linked to the brickworks, which was established in the area in 1871 and for many years supplied, amongst others, the Vesterbro district with bricks. Around the time of World War I, the great clay pit was transformed into a harbour basin, the current Teglværkshavn, and a navigation channel for the main channel was constructed. The first generation of industrial companies were shipyards, foundries and car assemble factories. In the 1970’s, the industrial companies started winding-up. In the late 1990’s, a number of international companies like Nokia and Philips began to set up office by Teglværkshavnen.
Teglholmen is an area of development and with its location in Copenhagen’s canals, Teglholmen is a unique opportunity to combine both city and nature. The area is only a short distance to Fisketorvet shopping centre and Copenhagen City Square, with the scenic park of Amagerfælled on the opposite side of the canal. The City of Copenhagen has adopted an expansion of the Metro network, which means that a metro station will be established at Teglholmen, just as there are plans for a bicycle and pedestrian bridge to Amagerfælled that will only make Teglholmen even more attractive. Teglholmen is developing into a modern canal town with new homes, a harbour, marina, shops, as well as a new primary school and daycare centres. All this helps to create a unique atmosphere and makes the area family-friendly and maritime. Teglporten’s corner location on Teglholmen’s south side with water on three sides and views of both Sluseholmen and Amagerfælled means Teglholmen undoubtedly has the best location.
